What is a Cover-up Tattoo?

A cover-up tattoo is a new design applied over an existing tattoo to conceal it. We offer creative cover-up designs at our walk in tattoo shop that can completely transform unwanted or faded ink. Our artists work with you to ensure the new tattoo blends seamlessly, using darker shades or innovative artwork to make the old design unnoticeable.

The best cover up tattoos are usually heavily shaded black images to completely hide the previous details.

Our Cover-up Tattoo Process

Step 1: Consultation Session

Our cover-up tattoo process starts with a consultation session, during which we assess your existing tattoo or cover-up scars. We discuss your ideas and goals, evaluate the size, color, and placement of the tattoo, and determine the best approach for the cover-up job.

Step 2: Custom Cover-up Design

Once we’ve evaluated the tattoo, our artists will create a custom design to effectively conceal the old tattoo. We focus on blending the new design with your preferences, using advanced techniques to ensure flawless cover-up.

Step 3: The Cover-up Process

The cover-up process involves applying the new design over the existing tattoos or scars. Multiple sessions may be required to achieve the desired results depending on the job's complexity. Our goal is to make the old tattoos or scars completely unnoticeable.

Step 4: Aftercare

After the cover-up, we provide detailed aftercare instructions to ensure your tattoo heals beautifully and maintains its vibrant look.

Tattoo Cover-up Healing Process

Month 1: Initial Healing

Your tattoo cover-up will undergo the initial healing phase during the first month. The area may appear red and swollen for the first few days. Scabbing will form over the tattoo as it heals. Avoid picking at the scabs to prevent damage. Keep the tattoo clean and moisturized with a recommended ointment.

Month 2: Settling In

By the second month, most of the scabbing should be gone. However, the tattoo may still look a bit dull or faded as the skin continues to repair itself. It's important to continue moisturizing and avoiding sun exposure, and the area may feel slightly sensitive.

Month 3: Final Healing

Your tattoo cover-up should be mostly healed in the third month. The colors and details of the tattoo will become more vibrant. However, the skin may still be adjusting, so avoid harsh sun exposure and continue proper aftercare for best results.

Tattoo Cover-up Aftercare Treatment

  • Keep the area clean:
Gently wash the tattoo with mild, fragrance-free soap and lukewarm water. Avoid scrubbing, and let it air dry or pat dry with a clean towel.

  • Avoid direct sunlight:
Keep the covered tattoo out of direct sunlight for at least two to three weeks. UV rays can cause premature fading and may damage the healing skin. Once healed, apply sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher.

  • Apply an aftercare ointment:
Use a thin layer of fragrance-free, tattoo-specific ointment or lotion our artist recommends. This will help keep the area moisturized and promote healing.

  • Avoid submerging in water:
Stay away from pools, hot tubs, and baths until the tattoo is fully healed. Exposure to water can increase the risk of infection.

  • Wear loose clothing:
Opt for loose-fitting clothing that won’t rub against the healing tattoo. This helps prevent irritation and allows for better airflow to the skin.

  • Don’t pick or scratch:
As the tattoo heals, it may scab or itch. Resist the urge to pick or scratch to avoid scarring and damaging the new design.

  • Follow your artist’s advice:
Every cover-up is unique, and our tattoo artist may provide specific aftercare instructions. Follow them closely to ensure the best results for your tattoo cover-up.

FAQs

Can I cover an existing tattoo?

You can cover an existing tattoo with a new design through a process called a tattoo cover-up. This involves placing a new tattoo over the old one to conceal or transform it. Tattoo artists use techniques such as layering darker ink, incorporating creative designs, and shading to ensure the original tattoo is no longer visible.

How much should a tattoo cover-up cost?

The cost of a tattoo cover-up can vary depending on the size, complexity, and location of the tattoo. The artist’s experience and the work needed to blend the new design will also affect the price.

Do tattoo artists do cover-ups?

Our tattoo artists specialize in cover-up tattoos. They are skilled in designing and applying new artwork over old tattoos, ensuring the original design is no longer visible or well-integrated into the new piece.

How do I find a good cover-up tattoo?

To find a good cover-up tattoo, research artists who specialize in cover-ups. Look at our portfolio for our previous work, paying close attention to how well we’ve hidden or transformed existing tattoos.

How long will a cover-up take?

The time required for a cover-up tattoo depends on the size and complexity of both the original tattoo and the new design. Typically, a cover-up can take several hours or multiple sessions, especially if the old tattoo is large or dark.

Are there tattoos that are hard to cover up?

Certain tattoos, especially those with dark or large designs, can be harder to cover up. Black ink and tattoos with dense patterns may require more sessions or specific techniques to hide effectively.

Can I cover up scars?

Tattoos can be used to cover scars. However, the success of scar cover-ups depends on the scar’s size, age, and texture. It’s best to consult our experienced artist specializing in scar cover-up tattoos.
